Rheumatoid arthritis causes

The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis isn’t yet known, but some theories suggest that it can be triggered by the body experiencing an infection and the immune system overreacting. Some people are more likely to develop the condition than others.

Risk factors can include:

genetics – rheumatoid arthritis seems to run in families
hormones – it is more common in women than in men, potentially because of estrogen
smoking – people who smoke tobacco are at higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, but we don’t yet know exactly why.
